RFID Tags and RFID Cards

Timeberry supports RFID tags and RFID cards. Employees can clock in and out using RFID transponders via the NFC sensor of the smartphone running Timeberry. RFID stands for radio-frequency identification and is a technology for contactless data transmission.

Which Smartphones Have an RFID Transponder?

RFID tags are read by the NFC sensor of the smartphone. NFC stands for Near Field Communication. Almost all smartphones now have an NFC sensor. Here you can find a list of NFC-compatible smartphones

Which RFID Transponders Are Suitable?

Not all RFID cards or tags are compatible with the NFC sensors of smartphones. High-Frequency RFID transponders (ISO/IEC 14443 A/B) usually work without issues. Look for 'HF' tags or 'HF' cards.

Where Should I Stamp with the Transponder?

The range of the NFC sensor combined with the RFID transponder is not very large: usually just a few centimeters. The sensor often only recognizes the transponder when you touch it in the right spot for a few seconds. The NFC sensor is often located on the back of the phone near the camera. Locate your smartphone's NFC sensor.

Communication usually does not work through the phone, so stamping only works either on the front or back of the phone. Depending on the position of the sensor in the phone, it may be necessary for the back of the smartphone to remain accessible for the RFID transponder. Metal parts of phone holders may block the NFC sensor.
